Tenino Real Estate

From its original incarnation where the Oregon Trail breaks off and heads north, Tenino has become more than just a “stopover” place for many people. Nearly 2,000 residents have decided this quaint town was worthy to be a final destination.

Tenino was first settled in the 1850s and many people traveling the Pacific Northwest by stage coach, and later by railroad, would have passed through the depot of this agricultural community. As the town’s population grew, so did its job opportunities; many residents worked at one of the local sandstone quarries or wood mills. Tenino became famous during the Great Depression for creating “wooden money.” To alleviate the money shortage caused by The Citizens Back of Tenino, the Tenino Chamber of Commerce printed emergency scrip on slices of cedar and spruce wood totaling more than $10,000 worth of currency.

Tenino City Park in Washington

As southern Thurston County saw an increase in population and business during the late 1900s, Tenino grew as well. Many homebuyers have chosen this small community as a pleasant alternative to Olympia and Lacey. Tenino’s natural beauty and semi-remote location provide its residents with an array of recreational activities. Parks such as Scatter Creek and Mill Pond include access to lakes and prairies with various trails and picnicking areas. The Yelm-Tenino Trail is a 14.5-mile path that connects communities through southern Thurston County. It traverses forest and agricultural lands, wetlands, creeks, and other habitat and runs parallel to State Route 507. The trail begins near Yelm City Hall and ends at Tenino City Park while winding through forest, farms, marshlands and creeks. The Yelm-Tenino Trail is great for residents who enjoy biking, hiking and viewing the natural wildlife.

Other attractions in Tenino include the Tenino Sandstone Buildings Walking Tour, most of which are located in the historic downtown area, and the Tenino Depot Museum, which displays various artifacts from the town’s 150+ year old history. The city of Tenino also maintains several parks that offer such facilities as a swimming pool, ball fields, playgrounds and campgrounds. Before children can take advantage of the numerous playgrounds, however, students attend schools within the Tenino School District so they can successfully prepare for future opportunities. With all that Tenino has to offer, homebuyers are looking to live in this wonderful Northwest town. Contact Nancy Griego to get your search started for Tenino real estate.
